PRINCIPLES OF HIRING ACCURACY

PRINCIPLE

#23
TO KNOW WHAT TO MEASURE, KNOW WHERE TO LOOK
To hire right, you have to know what candidate traits to measure. You'll find the answers for what to measure scattered across multiple sources. Use all of them.

In Harry Potter, the story's evil wizard makes himself immortal by scattering pieces of his soul into various, hard-to-find objects (horcruxes).

The only way the heroes can defeat the villain is to track down & destroy each horcrux one by one.

To conquer hiring accuracy, you have to follow a similar process.

Hiring right is about knowing what candidate traits to screen for....

But to know what traits matter, you have to know where to look.

The problem is the answers are spread out across various sources, external & internal to your company:

EXTERNAL
1-Research
2-Experts
3-Similar companies

INTERNAL
4-Leadership
5-Supervisors
6-Best employees
7-Worst employees
8-Trial & error

Each source contains some portion of the truth, but none contain all of it.

This means you'll need insights from each one.

Hiring mistakes are a villain for any company...

The good news is you can defeat them if you're willing to track down the answers in the right places.
