PRINCIPLES OF HIRING ACCURACY

PRINCIPLE

#5
FOCUS ON THE HIRING TRIFECTA
All bad hires come down to one of these unmet outcomes: 1) Performance, 2) Retention, 3) Cultural Fit. To hire accurately, you should be screening for all three.

FOCUS ON THE HIRING TRIFECTA

Principle #4 was to "Hire is to Predict"...

So what is it you're predicting?

You're predicting what I call "The Hiring Trifecta."

All bad hires come down to 1 of these 3 unmet outcomes:

1) PERFORMANCE - can they do the job.
2) RETENTION - can they stay in the job long enough to create value.
3) CULTURAL FIT - can they do/stay in the job without making everyone else around them miserable or less effective.

Because Every Job is Different (#3), the exact weighting you give to each of the above 3 outcomes during the screening process will vary.

If you're hiring a brain surgeon, you should weight performance more heavily.

If you're hiring a receptionist, you should weight retention/cultural fit more. After all, it's not brain surgery. :)

The point is you should be screening candidates for all 3 outcomes.

Most companies are pretty good at screening for 1, OK at screening for 2, but awful at screening for all 3.
